Most homes have DVRs in them, and most owners complain to a certain extent about those DVRs. They can only record up to two shows at once and movies fill up the hard drive quickly. Those are the main two complaints. Seagate Technologies has managed to stifle both of those complaints with one small, compact device called the Seagate Showcase.
When it comes out later this year, the Seagate Showcase will allow DVR users to record up to twelve HD shows at a time and store over 200 hors of HDTV. It can also hold over 1000 hours of regular television. That will give users plenty of flexibility to keep the shows and movies that they want for as long as they want. The Seagate Showcase has an initial capacity of 1TB, which has thus far been unheard of in the DVR industry.
The Seagate Showcase functions as an external hard drive to the DVR. That’s why it is able to store so much more video than a DVR itself. Just as a computer’s external hard drive gives a PC more storage capabilities, the same goes for the Seagate Showcase.
Currently, Seagate is only making the Seagate Showcase compatible with the Motorola e-SATA capable high-definition digital video recorder. There is no word yet about Seagate Technologies branching out and allowing their service to work with other DVR providers. However, as this technology takes off, DVR owners can expect other versions to follow.
